International Distribution of Elite Winter/Facultative Wheat Germplasm
International Distribution of Elite Winter/Facultative Wheat Germplasm
The International Winter Wheat Improvement Program (IWWIP) has completed the distribution of elite breeding lines through two key international nurseries. These nurseries facilitate the inclusion of diverse genetic materials for international testing, ultimately aiming to enhance wheat production worldwide.
The two international nurseries are:
• 27th International Winter Wheat Yield Trial for Irrigated Conditions (27th IWWYT-IRR)
• 26th International Winter Wheat Yield Trial for Semi-Arid Conditions (26th IWWYT-SA)
These nurseries are made available upon request, allowing researchers and breeders to access improved germplasm suited to their specific environmental conditions. For the 2024-2025 growing season, 62 sets of the 27th IWWYT-IRR and 63 sets of the 26th IWWYT-SA have been distributed both as yield trial and observation nurseries. This distribution has reached 64 cooperators across 24 countries, comprising national agricultural institutes, universities, and private sector organizations.
Through these efforts, the IWWIP aims at promoting collaboration and contributing to the development of high-yielding, resilient wheat varieties that can meet the challenges of climate change and food security.
